Parents
My cousin is 30 weeks pregnant, and so far, she has been gifted 32 baby blankets. Apparently, everyone and their brother thinks blankets are the gift. We’re here to tell you they’re not—the best baby gifts are thoughtful, practical products that will help the whole family transition to life with an infant at home.
To create our list of recommendations, we asked 875 parents and caregivers about the favorite gifts they’ve received for their babies. We also added a few baby products we believe are must-haves, many of which we’ve tested in our lab or at home. We also spoke to fellow parents and experts about the gadgets and gear they find most useful, and what they value most in a baby gift.
Our Favorite Baby Gifts

Toy for Babies
If you ask any kid, the consensus is that they can never have enough toys. While we're not sure that's entirely true, we do agree that an age-appropriate toy is a good gift idea. Some of our favorite toy options have an extra layer of functionality, like a plushy that doubles as a sound machine or a toy that helps make teething just a little easier.
Baby Gear
It seems like new baby gear hits the market every day. And while parents don't need every single new product that drops, there are a few things that everyone has on their registry. A convertible car seat is an incredibly useful gift that will save new parents a ton of money. Or, for a more budget-friendly option, you can spring for a diaper pail. Trust me, their noses will thank you!
Baby Care Essentials
It'll take new parents a minute to get used to the constant feedings, changings, and ever-growing pile of bottles in the sink. While you might not be able to physically lend a hand, you can still make thee fourth trimester a little easier with a helpful gift. We recommend gifting a ton of newborn diapers to ease the new parents' financial burden (since diapers aren't cheap!). Or, to take the guesswork out of feedings, consider gifting a smart baby bottle warmer.
Keepsakes for Babies
Having a baby is one of the most significant milestones in someone's life so we love the idea of a commemorative gift. Preserve precious memories with a picture frame and prints kit that they can hold onto forever. Or, if their little one was born around the holidays, you can opt for a sentimental ornament. Either way, a keepsake makes for a really thoughtful and meaningful gift.
Books for Babies
While you may think that infants don't need books because they can't understand language yet, reading to babies is essential. Support the development of the little ones in your life by gifting a beautiful board book or two. You may actually be gifting a life-long love of learning.
Clothes and More Gifts for Babies
Let's be real, dressing up a baby in a cute outfit is half the fun of having a new kiddo in your life. There are so many downright adorable clothing options out there. And since babies grow so quickly, you know parents will always need new baby clothes. You can also opt for less commonly gifted goodies like sleep sacks and newborn swaddles. These products can help baby sleep better which ultimately means more peace and quiet for the new parents.
Our Review Process
To kick off our search for the best baby gifts we started by surveying 875 parents to see what presents they got the most use out of and what their babies enjoyed playing with the most. We also researched the top trending toys and gear on the market to see what's making a splash in the industry.
From there, we evaluated each product based on it's age-appropriateness, safety, quality, and overall value. We also tested many of these products either in a lab, at home with our families, or a combination of the two.
Factors to Consider When Buying Baby Gifts
- Usefulness: You want to make sure that the gifts you choose won't just be taking up space in the new parents' home. For that reason, opt for presents that have a long lifespan. Consider a convertible carseat or a book that can be read over and over.
- Age-Appropriateness: While it seems obvious to opt for newborn-sized clothing and diapers, age isn't always the best measurement. Besides, babies grow so quickly, it's a good idea to opt for clothing and diapers in a variety of sizes. Think of a diaper subscription service that sizes up with the child. And before gifting any toys, doublecheck that there are no loose pieces or button batteries that can pose a choking hazard.
- Uniqueness: New parents will (hopefully) be receiving tons of gifts. To make sure you're not getting the same presents as everyone else, you might want to opt for something more unique. Plus, it'll make your gift stand out from the crowd more.
