Parents

As the mom of an active teen who tears up the volleyball court and loves jogging alongside her track star friends, finding the right deodorant for her was paramount when it became an apparent need. As kids get older and enter puberty, there’s an obvious increase in body odor that requires more than just bathing. That smell is a sign that it's time to introduce them to deodorant.

There are two ways to combat body odor: “Deodorants get rid of the odor of sweat by covering it up, and antiperspirants stop or dry up perspiration,” explains Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE, FAAP, a pediatrician, bioethicist, and professor of medicine at Stanford University. Most antiperspirants contain aluminum, while deodorants do not. According to our experts, kids going through puberty may find antiperspirants necessary; younger kids can typically stick to deodorant. Which product you choose will depend on your child’s needs and preferences.

To find the best deodorant for kids, we had real kids test 16 of the leading brands over a very hot summer. Testers evaluated and rated each deodorant on texture, ease of application, scent, and other factors. We also had their parents (bravely) do a sniff test at the end of the day to see if the deodorants successfully combated body odors.

Why We Like It

This pick passed all of our tests with flying colors. From its easy application to its strength against sweat and odor, the deodorant performed so well it had our teens raving about it. We also love that it’s plant-based, free of potentially irritating ingredients like aluminum, and features a nice beachy coconut scent.

Our teen tester wore it for eight hours outdoors during a heat wave and still smelled the coconut fragrance after his hot, humid day at camp. They also said the deodorant feels great against the skin thanks to its roll-on application. Plus, the clear formula doesn’t leave any white residue or stains behind.

What Parents Say

“It’s enjoyable to apply, and the smell lasts all day. [My son] wore it eight hours outdoors and says he'll happily use this every day going forward.” —Donna, mom of a 13-year-old

But Take Note

According to the brand, some people may experience a "detox period" when transitioning from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant. During this period, your body may release aluminum and toxins, leading to additional odor and sweating. This adjustment may take a few weeks, after which the natural deodorant will work as expected.

The Details:

  • Type: Deodorant
  • Form: Roll-on
  • Scent: Coconut
  • Active ingredients: Coconut oil, sage oil

Why We Like It

We love that this formula includes moisturizing plant-derived ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil. Our 11-year-old tester wore it daily for a week while playing basketball and soccer and participating in other outdoor activities. It was effective at keeping sweat and odor at bay all day.

Hello's line of shea butter deodorant is free of aluminum, baking soda, parabens, talcs, dyes, and artificial fragrances. They are available in several fragrances, including coconut, sage and eucalyptus, peach, and citrus. We tested the one created especially for kids: watermelon-scented “Unicorn.”

But Take Note

The texture of the deodorant wasn’t ideal. According to our tester, the deodorant felt a bit sticky, which made it hard to achieve a smooth application and full coverage. Unfortunately, Hello discontinued its fragrance-free version we loved.

The Details:

  • Type: Deodorant
  • Form: Solid
  • Scents: Watermelon (Unicorn), coconut, sage & eucalyptus, peach, charcoal fresh, and lavender vanilla
  • Active ingredients: Shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, arrowroot

Why We Like It

Swimming, dance class, recitals—our young tester was confident she wasn’t stinky when she wore this deodorant. It did as promised, stopping body odor throughout the day and then some. The tester applied it every other day (the formula prides itself on 72-hour coverage), and because it’s a whole-body formula, she also applied it to her feet and other body parts.

There is enough of a scent to be noticeable, but not overbearing—our mom liked this aspect because it was a telltale sign that her child applied. Formulated without aluminum, baking soda, synthetic dyes, phthalates, and parabens, our tester loved how smoothly it went on and that it didn’t leave any residue after drying.

What Parents Say

“She was able to put on the deodorant completely independently. It went on very smoothly, and she did not complain about it being sticky or greasy on her skin.” —Jessica, mom of a 5-year-old

But Take Note

This deodorant is slow to absorb—taking just under three minutes to fully dry—so it’s not great for when you’re in a rush to get out the door. The coconut oil may leave a residue on some fabrics.

The Details:

  •  Type: Deodorant
  •  Form: Solid
  • Scents: Options include lilac & waterlily, peach & vanilla, and unscented
  • Active ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ozokerite, Magnesium Hydroxide, Tapioca Starch, Fragrance, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Magnesium Carbonate, Piroctone Olamine

Why We Like It

Tubby Todd recommends this stick deodorant for kids as young as 6 years old, thanks to the light texture, ease of application, and safe ingredients. Rice bran, tapioca starch, and corn starch absorb wetness, while castor and coconut oils help reduce odor-causing bacteria. The citrus vanilla scent reminded us of a high-end creamsicle.

The skin-sensitive ingredients were appreciated by our 10-year-old tester, who didn’t experience the same red rash on her armpits as she has with other deodorants. She also noted that it was lighter, less sticky, and easier to apply than other stick deodorants she’s tried—it almost felt like lotion given how well it melted into her skin.

What Parents Say

"It was very easy to rub on and made her able to get a good layer of coverage....honestly why can't my deodorant be like this?" —Jodi, mom of a 10-year-old

But Take Note

Our tester noticed a light greasiness to her skin after applying the deodorant, which might be the trade-off for a smooth application.

The Details:

  •  Type: Deodorant
  •  Form: Solid
  • Scents: Citrus Vanilla
  • Active ingredients: caprylic/capric triglyceride, coconut oil, tapioca starch, magnesium hydroxide, corn starch, castor oil, bran wax

Why We Like It

Formulated specifically for tweens and teens, Miles hypoallergenic deodorant is gentle on young, delicate skin and is strong enough to get them through activity-filled days sans stink. Our 9-year-old tester appreciated not having to reapply since this was his intro to deodorant. He remained comfortable all afternoon despite being out in the heat. Its hardworking plant-based ingredients neutralize odor for 24 hours

It’s free of parabens and phthalates. The clear formula was absorbed immediately and didn’t leave any residue. The scents were a big hit with our tester: Clean is a citrusy medley, Rugged is a spicy cedar, cardamom, and bergamot mix, and Fresh is a blend of grapefruit, ocean minerals, and sweet agave.

What Parents Say

“My son was more willing to be around people after using the product. His attitude toward personal hygiene has improved after having used the product.” —Patrick, father of a 9-year-old

But Take Note

Because the stick is on the smaller side, you might find that the application process takes a little longer and requires more supervision for younger users to achieve full coverage. But since it packs a punch and lasts 24 hours, you won’t run through it that quickly.

The Details:

  • Type: Deodorant
  • Form: Stick
  • Scents: Options include Clean, Rugged, and Fresh
  • Active ingredients: Aluminum zirconium tetrachrolohydrex, cyclopent-asiloxane, tapioca and corn starches, aloe, sunflower seed oil

Why We Like It

The parent of our 11-year-old tester said this product was a major confidence booster for her son, who used it during wildlife camp, biking, and playing outside. The hypoallergenic, pH-balanced formula is enriched with magnesium and zinc oxides that are gentle yet powerful natural deodorizers. This makes it a great option for sensitive skin.

The stick softens upon contact with the skin, so it glides on smooth and clear, earning it an A+ from our tester. The formula helped counteract chafing and held true to its 24-hour claim to fight body odor all day. The clear deodorant absorbs well, leaving behind zero stains or residue.

What Parents Say

"My child said after he plays outside that his armpits ‘really stink,’ but after using the deodorant it's not nearly ‘as smelly.’" —Sarah, mom of an 11-year-old

But Take Note

Although the texture had a light gritty feel that didn’t absorb for quite a while (almost an hour), it wasn’t a deal breaker.

The Details:

  • Type: Deodorant
  • Form: Solid
  • Scents: Options include honeydew, vanilla spice, orange, and unscented
  • Active ingredients: Caprylic/capric triglyceride (Fractionated coconut oil), shea butter, arrowroot powder, Ozokerite, avocado oil, Magnesium oxide, Zinc oxide, rosemary oil, Vitamin E (non-GMO sunflower-derived)

Why We Like It

With this deodorant, our teenage tester felt more confident during a full day of activities, from working out to school, work, and sports practice. Even when the weather got hot and sticky, she stayed fresh. The coconut vanilla scent remained even after her treadmill run. Our tester saw long-lasting odor control, though it didn’t quite make it to the claimed 72-hour mark.

Body spray proved a great alternative to a stick deodorant for keeping in her bag since it’s not prone to melting in warmer temps. The easy-to-use spray also helped her not be self-conscious about other sweaty areas. The formula is created with ozone-friendly propellants and its misting action is powered by nitrogen.

What Parents Say

"This is my child's favorite deodorant. She's very particular about smells. It faded over time, but still held up its odor protection." —Sarah, mom of a 15-year-old

But Take Note

Don’t look to this spray for quick on-the-go application. Because it’s a fine mist, the formula doesn’t disappear immediately and may take a few minutes to fully dry.

The Details:

  • Type: Deodorant
  • Form: Spray
  • Scents: Options include coconut & vanilla, cucumber & mint, eucalyptus & mint, lilac & white tea, sea salt & cedar, and peach & nectar
  • Active ingredients: Denatured alcohol, dipropylene glycol, caprylic/capric triglyceride, water, fragrance, nitrogen

Why We Like It

After eight hours at soccer camp in hot and humid weather, this deodorant aced our scent and efficacy tests: no smells were detected. Our 11-year-old tester loved the mild fruity, powdery aroma and roll-on style that made for easy application without sticky residue.

Fresh Kidz deodorant has three scent options: Pink has a fresh floral scent with hints of bergamot, dewberry, jasmine, and amber; Purple has a light powdery scent with notes of vanilla, pink grapefruit, red currant, and jasmine; Blue has a clean citrus scent with elements of bergamot, rosemary, and neroli.

What Parents Say

“It’s a great entry-level deodorant. Easy to use, not ‘scary’ to kids, and easy to apply.” —Donna, mom of an 11-year-old

But Take Note

We noticed that kids needed to apply multiple coats of product (three to four) to feel fully protected.

The Details:

  • Type: Deodorant
  • Form: Roll-on
  • Scents: Options include powder, floral, and citrus
  • Active ingredients: Dicaprylyl carbonate, glycerin, triethyl citrate
Abercrombie & Fitch Kids Play Deodorant

Why We Like It

When your rough and tumble kid needs protection against odor, Abercrombie delivers. During long outdoor camp days in mid-90 degree heat, our 15-year-old tester felt confident. Forgoing the sweet scent that some kid’s deodorants deliver, it has a more “mature” scent—almost woodsy, our tester parent noted.

The smell was clean and fresh, and it stuck around to keep things on track even after eight hours of running around in the heat. The deodorant boasts soothing aloe, so not only does it keep your kid stink-free, but it’s also soothing to their skin.

But Take Note

The deodorant did feel a bit sticky for about 10 minutes after application. Also if your kid sweats a lot, this formula might not be as strong as you would like.

The Details:

  • Type: Deodorant
  • Form: Solid
  • Scents: Options include Play and Life
  • Active ingredients: Aloe

Why We Like It

Kids will love this roll-on deodorant’s fresh smell and easy application. Our 10-year-old tester was particularly impressed by the brand’s honeydew scent option, which smelled fresh and clean, even after a full day at camp. The deodorant goes on clear, so there’s no white residue or stains left behind on clothes.

This deodorant is chock-full of organic, plant-derived ingredients like aloe and witch hazel to help leave skin feeling soft and smooth. Bonus: The women-owned company says the deodorant is also safe to use on stinky feet.

What Parents Say

“If I had to use one word to describe it, it would be ‘amazing.’ My daughter put this on and went to summer camp for eight hours, running around outside, playing soccer. We didn't smell a thing!” —Nikki, mom of 10-year-old

But Take Note

We noticed that it goes on wet before drying quickly, which can take getting used to.

The Details:

  • Type: Deodorant
  • Form: Roll-on
  • Scents: Options include fresh honeydew and powder
  • Active ingredients: Aloe, witch hazel, lavender, and white tea

Why We Like It

If you're looking for an antiperspirant rather than just a deodorant for an older teen or for fighting excessive sweat and odors, this one is a great option. It contains aluminum, which our teen tester found effectively blocked sweat after wearing it for a full day at summer camp.

This deodorant has a “soft solid” creamy texture dispensed through slots on the top of the applicator. During testing, we found that it glides on smoothly, doesn't feel sticky, and the white cream becomes clear as you rub it in. The fragrance options include active fresh, free & sensitive, waterproof, stress response, and light & fresh.

But Take Note

The soft solid presentation takes a bit of getting used to and our tester found the “light & fresh” scent we tested “faint.”

The Details:

  • Type: Antiperspirant
  • Form: Soft solid (creamy textured dispensed through slots)
  • Scents: Options include lavender, coconut, powder, shower fresh, unscented, stress response, completely clean, and odor shield with charcoal
  • Active ingredients: Aluminum chloride

Why We Like It

During testing, parents and tweens were impressed by how well this “wicked cool” deodorant stood up to all kinds of active fun. Our 11-year-old tester described the fragrance as “mild and fresh.” The scent also impressed their parents, who said it held up against basketball, soccer, and other summer activities. We tested the “freestyle” scent, but it’s also available in “summer fun.”

We love that Tom's of Maine deodorant uses only naturally derived ingredients, its products are free of aluminum and parabens, and there are no artificial fragrances or preservatives. Its aloe and sunflower seed oil give it a smooth texture and moisturizing properties. The deodorant went on smoothly and didn’t leave any stains or residue on clothing.

What Parents Say

“My tween thought it did a great job keeping body odor away and I agreed!” —Amber, mom of an 11-year-old

But Take Note

However, this dreamy formula may melt in the heat, so we recommend keeping that in mind when packing it away.

  • Form: Solid
  • Scents: Freestyle, Summer fun
  • Active ingredients: Propylene glycol, aloe, and sunflower seed oil

Other Notable Deodorants We Tested

Our Testing Process

To find the best deodorants for kids, we first spoke to parents and dermatologists about the needs of tweens and teens. We then researched dozens of options on the market, using their input to narrow down our list to 17 top-rated deodorants for kids.

We then had real kids test these deodorants by incorporating them into their daily routines over the summer. During testing, kids attended camp, played sports, and ran around in the sun. At the end of the day, parents performed a sniff test to determine if the deodorant had effectively kept odors at bay. Additionally, kids assessed each deodorant on the following criteria:

  • Texture: We considered the texture of the deodorant and how it felt when applied to the skin. Did the texture make the application difficult? While some deodorants glided on smoothly, others felt sticky, tacky, gritty, or overly wet.
  • Stains or Reactions: We noted any stains or residue left behind on clothes or skin. In addition, we paid attention to adverse reactions like rashes, blisters, or itchiness.
  • Scent: We asked kids to rate the scent upon application. Was it something you'd want to smell like all day? Was it overwhelming or astringent? Many reported scents that were too light or scents that didn't last long enough.
  • Efficacy: To gauge each product's efficacy, we put the deodorants through the wringer: activity-filled weekends, hours of sports practice, and full days at camp during a super-hot summer. To determine how the deodorants fared, we asked parents to perform a sniff test after a full day of wear.
  • Value: We asked parents to consider the price against the quality, efficacy, and lasting ability of the deodorant to assess its overall value.

Our Experts

To find out what to look for in a kids' deodorant, we also spoke with:

  • Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE, FAAP, a pediatrician, bioethicist, adjunct professor at Stanford School of Medicine, and director of digital health at Stanford’s Sean Parker Center for Asthma and Allergy Research
  • Joshua Zeichner, MD, associate professor of dermatology and director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital

Factors to Consider

  • Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant: In addition to fragrance, antiperspirants typically contain aluminum, which helps block sweat to prevent body odor. That means they’re best for when you’re dealing with sweat-related odor issues. Deodorants lack aluminum, instead using fragrance and other ingredients known to inhibit odors and/or absorb moisture, such as talc, baking soda, coconut oil, or activated charcoal. They’re great for odor prevention.
  • Application Type: Deodorants and antiperspirants are available in a variety of forms: solid, roll-on, soft solid, cream, spray, gel, crystal, and wipes. The type of deodorant your child uses will depend on their preferences. If you choose a solid deodorant, opt for one that goes on clear to prevent white residue or stains on clothing.
  • Scented vs. Unscented: For deodorant-reluctant kids, a sweet or fun-smelling product can convince them to use it daily. Most deodorants for kids have options with a light fragrance that isn't too overwhelming.
  • Ingredients: The skin in your child's underarm is delicate. To ensure their deodorant doesn't cause a rash or other irritation, opt for a formula free from harsh chemicals or fragrances and perform a patch test before using the product. Dr. Swanson says there’s no need to panic about aluminum, parabens, or propylene glycol, but “if you're concerned about these ingredients, you can skip the antiperspirant and choose a gentle deodorant for your child or teen.”

Is Aluminum Antiperspirant Safe for Kids?

Aluminum salts keep us from sweating because they dissolve and stop sweat production. “Some people have concerns that aluminum and other ingredients found in antiperspirants (parabens and propylene glycol) might be linked to an increased risk of some medical problems in life,” Dr. Swanson notes. “This has not been proven in human studies, and studies have not shown that applying these substances to the skin causes an increased risk of any disease.” People with kidney problems may need to avoid aluminum since their bodies may not be able to filter it out fast enough.

Which Is Better for Kids: Deodorant or Antiperspirant?

According to Dr. Zeichner, when choosing between deodorant and antiperspirant for kids, you should consider the purpose. “Many antiperspirants also provide deodorant effects, helping to neutralize odor. Straight deodorants, on the other hand, only address odor but not wetness,” he explains. “If your main concern is a foul smell, then a deodorant is for you. If you are suffering from wetness or excessive sweating, then you should look for an antiperspirant.”
